Elton John Oscar Party Raises Millions for AIDS
Elton John's post-Oscars AIDS Foundation bash raised a whopping $3.7 million over the weekend. Following a dinner and performance by Grace Jones, guests were given the opportunity to bid in a live auction that offered a variety of musical collectibles and other memorabilia.
The event, which was attended by such celebrities as Betty White, Nicole Richie and Victoria Adams, also offered up a college-era photo of President Barack Obama. The picture was auctioned off for $60,000.
John also offered up the costume he wore at January's Grammy Awards (auctioned for $30k) and a watch from his personal collection (auctioned for $90k).
Additionally, a week-long stay at John's vacation home in Nice, France was fetched up for the princely sum of $140,000.
"I'm so blown away this year," said the musician. We're supposedly struggling though a recession and yet it keeps getting better every year."
Other items auctioned off include private tennis lessons from Andre Agassi and Steffi Graff, which brought in $70,000 for the foundation.
